New Power Technology: Nationwide, 24/7
An old construction estimating joke goes: “You need it good, affordable, and fast? Pick two, then call me back. ”
When the developer of new power industry technology needed not only quality, budget, and speed, and safety, and the ability to quickly and consistently deliver anywhere in the country at any time, Helmkamp met the challenge.
Helmkamp’s long experience and strong staffing in power plant work has paid off for the technology company. The engineering firm is supplying turnkey clean coal solutions for power generation plants around the country. The projects include the installation of conveying and chemical application equipment, plus all supporting structural steel.
The new process has proven exceedingly popular with power plants from Texas to North Dakota because of federal tax credits associated with installation of the process. The catch is that the projects have time-sensitive deadlines associated with them in order to achieve the tax incentives.
Veteran Helmkamp power generation project managers Joe Stange and Brian Bechard have been traveling around the country organizing these projects. Joe most recently has been the lead project manager on $45 million worth of civil work on a power plant flue gas desulfurization program. Brian has been working with Joe as assistant project manager on that project.
Each project has its own unique issues. For example, at one plant a tire feeder had to be demolished in order to install the new equipment. The tire feeder had a conveyor structure that also supported some existing utilities.
These kinds of challenges – coupled with the fact that the work is frequently performed on a 24/7 basis, in operating plants with no outages – calls for meticulous project coordination and millwright/ironworker team members who are skilled and comfortable relying on one another.
Helmkamp’s experienced teams have proven up to the task.
“The benefits of working with Helmkamp have been flexibility, quick installations, and the ability to mobilize and manage in various states,” the customer’s development director said.
